Workplace Recycling Standards Guide

My Store Admin |

At Warehouse Land, we know that keeping a warehouse running smoothly is all about efficiency and organisation. As of last year, that efficiency now extends to how we handle our waste. The UK’s "Simpler Recycling" legislation is now officially in effect for most businesses. Whether you are managing a busy distribution centre or a small stockroom, the days of "all-in-one" bins are behind us.

What are the Current Rules?

As of 31 March 2025, most workplaces in England (those with 10 or more employees) are legally required to separate their waste into specific streams before collection. If you haven’t updated your warehouse waste management system yet, you are currently at risk of non-compliance.

The Five Mandatory Waste Streams

Your facility must now separate the following items from your general waste:

Food Waste: This includes everything from staff room leftovers and fruit peels to tea bags and coffee grounds.

Glass: Bottles and jars (common in canteen areas).

Metal: Drinks cans, food tins, and clean foil.

Plastic: Bottles, pots, tubs, and trays.

Paper & Cardboard: Shipping boxes, envelopes, and office documents.

Warehouse Tip: While many collectors allow "Dry Mixed Recycling" (combining paper, plastic, metal, and glass), Food Waste must, by law, be collected in its own dedicated, separate bin.

How Warehouse Land Can Help

Transitioning to these new standards doesn’t have to disrupt your workflow. To stay compliant in 2026, we recommend:

Colour-Coded Stations: Use distinct bins for Cardboard, Food, and Mixed Recycling in high-traffic areas. Recycling bins and containers are designed in a number of cardboard, steel and plastic options.

Clear Signage and Labelling: Don't assume everyone knows where the shrink wrap goes. Use high-visibility posters to prevent contamination.

Staff Briefings: Ensure your team recognises that even a half-eaten sandwich in the cardboard skip is now a legal and financial risk.

A Note for Micro-Businesses

If your business has fewer than 10 employees, you currently have a "grace period" until 31 March 2027. However, we recommend starting the transition now to avoid the rush and start optimising your waste costs early.
